Thoughts; Mental Health

Many of our life challenges and solutions to those challenges start in the mind. Indeed when you come to think about it everything that we create, maintain and destroy start with the mind. Our thoughts are energy. Everything is in fact energy.  Thoughts are the mind’s energy. So working with thoughts and feelings are an inherent part of any therapy. I have found the following to be a very simple way to pull together the connection between our values, beliefs, thoughts, behaviour and where we are going in life.

“Your values become your beliefs

Your beliefs become your thoughts

Your thoughts become your words

Your words become your actions

Your actions become your habits

Your habits become your destiny”.

 Starting with values, these can include virtues such as love, truth, justice, goodness and wholeness. These can be our guiding principles for living a good life, for living a positive life. Beliefs are developed gradually over a period of time and can be strongly influenced by our values. These beliefs need to be reviewed throughout our life to ensure that they continue to serve us well. They will change somewhat based on circumstances but our core beliefs, if guided by our values, will remain steadfast. Much of our thinking and decision-making are based on our beliefs. It would be interesting to check this out for yourself. Take a recent decision and ask yourself was it based on any of the above values or other positive values that you have chosen.

Your thoughts ultimately determine your actions. If these thoughts are positive then most of your behaviour will be driven by love for yourself and for others. You will be living a happy life and transcend all of life’s challenges. You will not be getting bogged down in the minor issues. You will have written your own life script and nobody else will be living your life for you.
